Mike Freund received a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Florida Atlantic University in 1987 and his Ph.D. in 1992 from the University of Florida. Subsequently, he became a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology under the supervision of Nathan Lewis.
He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Lehigh University before moving back to Caltech as the Director of the Materials Science Center in the Beckman Institute.
In 2002 he moved to the University of Manitoba where he attained the rank of Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Adjunct Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering. During his time there he was awarded a Tier 2 and eventually a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. While there he also established the Manitoba Institute for Materials, where he served as Director and led its expansion with the addition of a suite of electron microscopes in addition to a wide range of surface characterization infrastructure.
Dr. Freund is now Professor and Head of Chemistry at the Florida Institute of Technology.
